Schiesher Third Graders "Sound Off!"

Throughout the third grade halls at Schiesher, sounds of many different kinds can be heard: sounds of talking, laughing, sharing, and caring. So, while studying a Sound Unit in Science, our third graders were asked what makes sound, what did they know about sound, and what did they learn about sound. Several students shared their knowledge.  Nick said that he learned that sound is vibration. Griffin added that making a kazoo and using it helped him feel vibration. Sammy was surprised to learn how sound can travel through solids. “Sound can even be made loud or soft,” Hannah continued. Students even learned that tuning forks could help determine pitch, and that pitch is different from a sound being loud or soft. Katie and Renee didn’t know what  the word “echolocation” meant, but learned that is a process in which ships at sea use sonar to detect objects in the water and to tell how deep the ocean is in different places. Sierra and Jacob shared that they knew that bats use echolocation to catch their prey. It’s amazing to “hear” what third graders are saying. Studying the process of making sounds helped us all understand and appreciate the many sounds that surround us at Schiesher School!
